Right On Target
With axe throwing growing in popularity at bars across the country, one local couple decided to get in on the action. Upon being introduced to the sport in Louisville, Kentucky last year, Steven and Caroline Laatsch were hooked. As the owners of Rocket Wood Products in Pekin, they decided to design their own target board after returning from that trip, and Rocket Axe Throwing was born.
Axe throwing might sound like an accident waiting to happen, but no serious injuries have been reported as a result. Caroline, a former OSHA inspector, and Steve, a retired naval officer, are both staunch advocates for safety. “It’s our number-one priority,” Steve explains. “I often say, ‘I pay a lot for insurance that I hope I never need to use!’”
Rocket Axe has set up outdoor target lanes at four area locations—Industry Brewing in Peoria, McMahon’s Pints & Plates in Washington, Psycho Silo Saloon in Langley, and Hill Prairie Winery in Oakford—and trained staff is on hand at each location to show the proper techniques. Lanes can be reserved for $20 per person per hour, and may be rescheduled due to inclement weather. The Laatsches plan to expand into new territories and eventually include indoor throwing lanes as well. rocketaxe.com PM
