Kids Recognized for Creative Writing
Since 1995, WTVP has presented the PBS Kids Writers Contest to inspire creativity in children in kindergarten through third grade. To qualify, all submitted stories must be fiction (either prose or poetry) and accompanied by original illustrations. This year, 12 grade schoolers from seven area schools were awarded prizes at a ceremony in the WTVP studio and read their stories to the audience.
“The children are very creative with some surprisingly inventive plots, characters and illustrations. Of course, unicorns, superheroes and princesses make their way into many of the stories!” says Mary Heinemann, WTVP’s education outreach coordinator. “This year, however, food took the starring role in more than a few stories. I am always touched by the stories that include a message of fairness, kindness and good will toward others.” PM
